A Natural Application Of Logistics Business Essay - Free Essay Example

We human have many questions to answer, all can be answered by the nature but as we go in deep inside in the web of the nature. Again a question arises how to see and understand its nuances? Only we have to search a right magnifying glass to see through it. Here I like to put a magnifying glass on ant colony. I know all of you thinking back in your mind how ants could teach lessons in logistics? That is absurd how that invisible, intangible and minute asset could leave such indelible marks on a companys bottom line? But in an economy that relies more on ideas, individuals and change rather than on traditional bureaucracy, companies achieve and maintain competitive advantage over others. Swarm intelligence Many Scientist are working on ants, butterfly, bee, cooken to nuances of amazing efficiency of social insects. Companies like Hewlett-packard , southwest Airline , Unilever are working on this new way of thinking about business. Eric Bonabeau is the founder and Chief Scientist of Boston-based Icosystem Corporation, one of the worlds leading experts in complex systems and distributed adaptive problem solving , co-writer of the book Swarm Intelligence, readily admits that he was not the first to see how his work studying social insect colonies could be applied to the management of complex corporations. When I was first approached to draw parallels between business and insect behavior, I was very skeptical, Bonabeau recalls. Then I realized that human behavior is highly constrained in a human organization [just like in an ant colony] and because of that, it might be possible to model human behavior with the same tools that I use to model social insect colonies. Such behavior, sw arm intelligence is a successful illustration of self-organization on a large scale. The traits that enable a colony of ants to find food manage colony and set up supply chains, can help companies to find efficient solutions to complex problems. The colony can quickly adapt to a changing environment; it can perform its necessary tasks even when one or more individual ant fails; and it needs relatively little supervision or top-down control. Bonabeau employs rigorous mathematical models that enhance these traits of flexibility, robustness and self -organization to help a company hone its competitive edge. Traits of social insect has helped several companies including Unilever , McGrawHill and Capital one to develop more efficient ways to schedule factory equipment, divide task among workers , organize people and even plot strategy Foraging For solution -These Ant-forging Algorithms is a natural application of Logistics. Researchers from Hewlett-packards laboratories in Bristol , England have developed a computer program based on ant-foraging principles that routes calls efficiently. In the program, hordes of Software agents roam through the telecom network and leave bits of information (digital information) to reinforce path through uncongested area. Phone calls then follow the trails left by the ant like agents. Southwest Airlines used the principles of swarm intelligence to streamline its cargo operations, save more than $10 million a year. Some of the airlines discoveries about itself at first seemed counter-intuitive. For example, Southwest discovered that it can be beneficial to leave cargo on a plane, even if it was initially headed in the wrong direction. If the airline wanted to send a package from Boston to Chicago, it might be more efficient to leave it on a plane heading for Atlanta and then Chicago rather than wait for a direct flight or transfer it mid-route. This finding slashed freight transfer rates by as much as 80 percent at the busiest cargo hubs and reduced the workload for people who move cargo, allowing Southwest to cut back on its storage facilities and minimize wage costs. Furthermore, the resulting flexibility meant that the airline could still make money even if the planes werent fully loaded, which opened up significant opportunities to generate new business. Variations on the ant-foraging algorithm also helped Unilever, the multinational consumer goods company; develop decision-making software for its production facilities that was faster and more automatic than traditional efficiency methods. At one complex-liquid manufacturing plant, the chemical mixers, storage tanks and packaging lines each have different rates of operation, different abilities to be connected to other equipment, different capacities, different changeover times for switching from one product to another and different maintenance schedules, all occurring in a dynamic environment in which machinery can break down without warning and cust omer demand is increasingly volatile. Bonabeau examined how ants surmount unexpected obstacles in their relentless quest to find food and bring it back to the nest, and produced software that copes easily with changing conditions. Insights gleaned from swarm intelligence also helped Capital One, the giant financial-services company; replace its rigid command-and-control management style with a more flexible approach better suited to a fast-growing business. Like a medium-size ant colony whose territory is invaded by a larger competitor, Capital One constantly searches out and targets new market opportunities. To encourage employees to look for opportunities outside their immediate departments, Capital One revamped its employee-evaluation system to reward people who actively search for such food sources. The extent to which this behavior supports the business strategy was implicit in a comment in the companys annual report soon after it adopted the precepts of swarm intelligence: Many of our business opportunities are short-lived. We have to move fast to exploit them and move on when they fade. Scanning the Periphery One of the important things we can learn from the Ant is scanning the Periphery. Ant builds their empire but never leave their eyes on the Periphery, they can deduce the incoming thread and opportunity in advance, it makes them easy to warn there counterpart in the colony. In most of the survey 9 out 10 corporate accept 3 out of 5 big threads which it faces, they dont have any information (warning) about it in advance. When thread came to smack them they are empty hands. With the ant behavior our modern Business house can learn how to have eye not only on target but also on periphery so they have proper and valid information that what other player are doing and use it for their benefits Networking knowledge When you look at how organizations really work, says Bonabeau, who has written about swarm intelligence in the Harvard Business Review, the Journal of Business Innovation and in a book he co-authored, Swarm Intelligence: From Natural to Artificial Systems (Oxford University Press, 1999), the hierarchical chart is very rarely the structure that people use to get their jobs done. Karen Stephenson couldnt agree more. A professor at Harvards School of Design and Imperial Colleges School of Management at the University of London as well as a software entrepreneur for NetForm International, Stephenson studies the informal pathways by which knowledge is communicated throughout an organization. Why is that important? Think of it this way: If the official organizational chart shows the rules of a company, the human network shows the ropeswhat really makes things work and gets things done. Each person in that web represents a node, but not all nodes have the same nature. Some are what Stephenson calls hubs, people who become a gathering and sharing point for critical information. Some are pulsetakers, who carefully cultivate relationships that allow them to monitor the ongoing health and direction of the organization. And some are gatekeepers, information bottlenecks who control the flow of contact to a particular part of the organization. These nodes and networks house and transmit tacit knowledge, the vitally important information that gives a company its competitive edge. Furthermore, Stephenson has identified at least six different types of networks, each of which represents a core layer of knowledge, ranging from how the company works to how innovation is sparked and nurtured to how it is disseminated throughout the company and becomes part of its modus operandi. Like the bodys circulation system, nervous system and skele-to-muscular system, all of these networks combine to sustain the health of an organization. Conversely, if theres a problem with one, t hen the health of the entire organization is affected. By performing the equivalent of an MRI on an organization, Stephenson helped Amgen, the worlds largest biotechnology company, reduce the rate of attrition among its research scientists, IBM re-engineer itself, Steelcase design a new furniture consultation service and J.P. Morgan smooth its merger with Chase Manhattan. The most relevant aspect of her work has to do with the lifeblood of companies today: innovation. At the root of all bureaucracies, she says, is an innovation that didnt get harvested in time. At the other end of the spectrum, is an innovation that went too far, which sometimes results in fraud. And in the middle is a network that nurtures innovation appropriately so that it benefits the organization. There is an optimal balance between social networks and organizational hierarchy, Stephenson says, and there are correlations between these networks that show when an organization is ready for a change. If yo ure knowledgeable about this, you can leverage your human capital appropriately. Grasping intangible assets One of the confounding aspects of tacit knowledge networks is that they can be mapped and their results measured on a companys bottom line, yet they cant be physically grasped. Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan spoke to this issue last year when he talked about how the weight of the economy had declined. What he meant was that the economy is no longer being measured in locomotives and factories; instead, it is measured in ideas and people. Evaluating the ramifications of such intangible assets is what Jonathan Low and Pamela Cohen Kalafut of Cap Gemini Ernst Youngs Center for Business Innovation have been puzzling over for the past five years and wrote about in their recent book, Invisible Advantage: How Intangibles Are Driving Business Performance. Creon as the Ideal Tragic Hero of Sophocles Antigone Essay

Creon as the Ideal Tragic Hero of Antigone Tragedy always involves human suffering, but not everyone who suffers is a Tragic Hero. According to Aristotle, there are five basic criteria that must be met for a character to be considered a Tragic Hero. Aristotle’s ideas about tragedy were recorded in his book of literacy theory titled Poetics. In it he has a great deal to say about the structure, purpose and intended effect of tragedy. His ideas have been adopted, disputed, expanded, and discussed for several centuries. In this essay, I will examine these criteria in regards to Antigone’s Creon, King of Thebes. The first criterion states that to be a tragic hero, Creon must occupy a high status position, but must also embody†¦show more content†¦Since he values his country, a noble feature, he holds all those against it in contempt. He would not count any enemy of [his] country as a friend (line 206). In this case, the enemy is Polyneices who decided to attack Creon’s beloved country. In just retaliation, Creon decided to punish him, as would any ruler punish an aggressor. Similarly, Creon is a good leader to his people. He punishes evil and rewards good as mentioned above. He is seen by the people, as well as his own son, to have goodness in his leadership (lines 691). Thus, Creon’s noble character seen through the love of his country, through the just decision to punish Polyneices, and through his good leadership qualifies him for the 1st criterion of being a tragic hero. Secondly, Aristotle suggests that to be a tragic hero, one must not be perfect although his character is pre-eminently great. This is certainly true of Creon’s case. For example, in the above paragraph, we proved that Creon is essentially good because he chose to punish Polyneices. However, his choice of punishment—not burying Polyneices—does not rank as high on the moral spectrum. In fact, Antigone believes that Creon dishonors Polyneices by not burying him, by not honoring what the gods have honored (line 89). By going against his people’s centuries of beliefs, Creon’s character finds its imperfection. Furthermore, one can also see imperfection inShow MoreRelated The Tragic Hero: Creon or Antigone? Children Need Vaccinated Throughout the world, approximately three million people die from vaccine-preventable diseases each year; half of the people who die are children who are less than five years of age (Offit, 2014). When a person dies from a disease that has an available vaccine, that death could have been prevented. Parents do not vaccinate their children for an abundance of reasons. Although they feel that they are protecting their children, they are actually exposing them to countless life-threatening diseases. People who are not vaccinated cause problems within society, and unless there is a medical reason as to why a person cannot be vaccinated, vaccinations should be mandatory. Why Children Are Not Being Vaccinated Religion Reasons Most organized religions, such as Catholicism and Judaism, do not prohibit vaccinations; however, smaller religious groups oppose vaccinations based on their religious philosophy. One group who opposes vaccinations is the Christian Scientists (Ciolli, 2008). People who practice Christian Science are allowed to choose the form of health care they want. Most opt to pray about health issues instead of using medicine. They do not believe in vaccinations because they believe prayer will heal their ailments (What is Christian Science, 2016). Management Information Systems in Applebees Dominos Pizza Essay Example For Students

Management Information Systems in Applebees Dominos Pizza Essay Introduction: The management information system (MIS) has a primary task of helping an organization become and stay efficient and effective. Managers use this computer-based system to organize, analyze, and execute plans to help the organization flow and accomplish its goals. The system can be used to study information in the form of employees, cost, profit, tecknology, procedures and documents. Often MIS are much different from standard information systems because they study other information systems that are related to the operational tasks in an establishment. It is highly important for an organization to understand what MIS they need in order to remain competitive in the industry. Secondly, it is important for an organization to have a MIS which will promote both short term and long term organization goals. The improvement of technology over the years has allowed managers to make faster decisions based on the information that is collected by the system. However, this is also a negative aspect to the information systems. Situations can happen where imprecise reporting can take place thus leading to terrible decision making. MIS can vary from one type of business to another however; the main goal of all systems is to support organizational goals and objectives and to develop greater level of communication among all the employees. Creators of MIS must keep in mind to create systems that are relievable, accurate, complete, relevant and consistent. In this research paper, I will discuses the MIS used in two different restaurants â€Å"food chains† â€Å"Dominos Pizza Applebee’s†. I intend to showcase the MIS used to help the two restaurants accomplish day-to day business activities. In each restaurant the ambiance, purpose and atmosphere is different. We can see why the two MIS are different and why it’s more appropriate for one MIS to belong in one restaurant and not the other. E-ecommerce has completely changed how day the day business takes place. We can see from the charts on the next page, online business has increased a great deal since 2003, with the exception of the 07-08 financial crises. The main reason for its growth is the fact that technology is ever changing and managers are often under pressure to increase sales in new and innovating ways (internet). The increase in global and local competition has further created the need to do business online due to its low cost and how user friendly the internet has become. Methodology: The methodology used to research this paper has primarily been my own experience working as a server in Applebee’s and my experience ordering Dominos Pizza. I have extensive knowledge on how Applebee’s does day to day business (MIS). Other information has been researched and collected from reliable sources online such as the SEC, Hoover’s database company websites and other websites. Problem: What MIS will Applebee’s and Dominos adapt in order to remain competitive in today’s economy? Dominos: Dominos Pizza was founded in 1960 and is recognized as the world’s largest pizza delivery chain. The organization aims to become the world’s absolute best pizza delivery company. According to the Dominos Pizza website, they have over 10,000 employees, 500 company owned stores in the US and well over 8,000 franchise owned stores in over 60 nations. According to Hoover’s database the retail sales have grown significantly over the year which is largely due a growing number of investors opening up their very own Dominos Pizza Store. In the year 2007 the combined total revenue both domestic and international was $5. 4 billion. Dominos Pizza isn’t a family oriented place where family or friends would go to eat, watch T. V. , and hang out. It is very much automated and at times can be impersonal. The Dominos computerized management system was created for many reasons. One reason was to increase the operating efficiency and effectiveness in day to day activities. The higher management â€Å"corporate† is now able to use up to date marketing and financial information and also lower both the overall and corporate time and costs. The Dominos’ PULSE system also known as a point-of sale system can be found in all domestic Dominos stores and also in majority of all the Dominos stores located around the world. With the Pulse system, day to day operation runs more efficiently and smoothly. The touch screen helps the worker correctly take the order (kind of pizza, toppings, size). The system also takes into consideration any promotions Dominos may be offering. This allows the employee to focus his/her attention on other customer needs thus improving the chances the customer will return in the future. Space Exploration EssayChristopher Mcglothlin, the CIO at Dominos states â€Å"Dominos is the fourth largest online sales company in the country with some 20 million transactions a year†. He believes the online ordering systems are important for Dominos growth and its guest relations has increased as a result of the high volume of orders placed online. At this point the marketing team can create promotions and advertisements directly aimed at those customers who have placed orders online since they have their address and information. It is clear, that Dominos Pizza has implemented a great system that goes hand in hand with the world of e-commerce. Other companies can’t do an e-commerce expansion due to the fact that their main competitive advantage is in location service such as â€Å"Applebee’s†. Dominos on the other hand doesn’t have tables and chairs in their stores, along with TV’s, bars, servers, waiters, bartenders, captains, mangers, etc. It was a very easy decision for Dominos to go online; however, the same wouldn’t apply to Applebee’s just yet. Part of the experience of Applebee’s is to come in with friends or family, have a waiter take the orders, watch sports, drink beer and listen to music. Anytime during your visit and you may see Applebee’s waiters sing a special song for a guest on their birthday. Applebee’s can’t transfer that service online. For Applebee’s to go online and try to sell their products would be much harder due to the fact that the menu is much more expensive and isn’t ideal for a person on a small budget. Dominos on the other hand is much less expensive. An example of this can be Dominos Pizza 555 deal, where someone can order three medium sized pizzas for $15. Applebee’s on the other hand has an average meal of $10. 50-$14. 0 per person. Conclusion and Recommendations: We can see that both Applebee’s and Dominos Pizza have remained competitive through-out the tough economy. Applebee’s has upgraded its POS systems in order to make the system easier to use for ordering, training, advertising, and the analyzing sales. Dominos Pizza on the other hand also has a POS system set up â€Å"PULSE†. The system takes orders, tells the chef what pizza to make and also prints out the directions to the destination. Dominos however, has taken the next step and entered the e-commerce business. Now a customer can customize and order Dominos online. This has given them a competitive advantage over the traditional in store restaurant and help cut cost. Applebee’s hasn’t yet taken its business online due to the fact that its service is the main thing they are known for. To go online would make the Applebee’s experience a lot different. Dominos should not only continue to do business online but set up a list of customers who have ordered from them before. After ordering more than $100 of food, a customer would be able to get a free large pizza. Dominos should also, add chairs to their stores in case customers like to sit and eat their food. Attracting, customers on foot is hard and I believe Dominos should try to keep them comfortably and welcomed if they decide to do business with dominos. Applebee’s should consider taking its business online. Perhaps, they can make all of their meals frozen and deliver them frozen to the customer’s home. The customer may then heat up the meal anytime and it would taste just as if it was in a real Applebee’s store. The Applebee’s new POS system however, is very effective and doesn’t need to change. In conclusion, both Applebee’s and Dominos have remained competitive in this tough economy and have picked great MIS systems to help run the day to day business. Why Do Today What Can Be Put Off Until Tomorrow Essay Example

Why Do Today What Can Be Put Off Until Tomorrow Essay There are countless ways a student can avoid success in life, but one of the main behaviors which can cause an individual to fail is procrastination. When students have to complete a task or a big project many of them confuse their priorities, and find themselves waiting until the last minute to finish the task at hand. Another cause for procrastination could be the lack of initiative the student might have in completing an assignment. Or simply some students may fear failure, and may not have full confidence in themselves in order to do the assignment. Procrastination may seem like an easy way out in beginning, but if it’s not address it turns into a huge obstacle of unnecessary stress at the end. The inability for a student to prioritize what is important and what is not, is one of the most common reasons why a student chooses to put off their work. When an assignment seems difficult a student may begin to start thinking of different ways to avoid the work altogether. They may also begin to work on an assignment and feel as if they worked too hard and decide to take a break, forgetting about the work altogether. Consequently they become accustomed to the instant satisfaction of taking a break that it becomes another motive for putting off the work. As the student realizes that the due date draws near a sense of panic overcomes them, which temps them into giving up completely. Another reason why a student may choose to procrastinate may be the lack of initiative to complete the task presented to them. This mentality can hinder the ability for a person to concentrate in their task. Also others may find false security in thinking that they can do the task tomorrow; as a result the person puts off doing the work until the night before the due date. This causes them to work under stress through long hours of the night and as a result they turn in an assignment which is poorly completed. Fear is a very strong emotion, and many students face it when having to do an assignment. They may avoid the assignment all together because they feel like they don’t have the adequate knowledge or skill in order to do the work correctly. Procrastination also feeds on making the individual feel like they are not good enough and falsely gives the individual the idea that it’s ok not to the work. Some people may also fear the professor’s criticism that accompanies their work whether it is constructive or not. Fear can blindly make an individual accept the false idea that they have to be procrastinators and be complaisant with this behavior. Procrastination may give a feeling of instant satisfaction but in the long run it does affect the efficiency of a student. It does not matter how easy or complex an assignment may seem, the bottom line is that it will have to be completed sooner or later. Don’t fall back on the though â€Å"I’ll have more time tomorrow† because you may be busier tomorrow than today. A Journey to the Center of the Earth essays

A Journey to the Center of the Earth essays Professor Hardwigg yells excitedly to Harry. Harry ran to the professor to find him sitting in front of a very old looking book, with yellowed pages and hand-made cover. Harry is starving, but forgets about it over the strange excitement. Harry asks Professor Hardwigg what all of the excitement is over so he explains: The book is an old Icelandic book written by Heims-Kringla, a very brilliant author from the twelfth century. Harry reaches over and grabs the book, and a manuscript written in a different hand falls out. The professor quickly discovers the author of it being Arne Saknussemm, a brilliant alchemist of the 16th century who was killed because of his views. The Professor and Harry cant decode the document. The professor gets very frustrated and vows that he wont eat or sleep until he decodes the parchment. After a while, even he gets frustrated with it and leaves the office in which they are working. Harry picks up the small document and looks at it as he smokes! from his pipe. He starts to get warm so he fans himself with the parchment, amazingly when he turned it upside down, he was able to easily read it. It said the exact location and a short story of how to find the center of the earth. This started the long journey. The excited professor and Harry set off on an excellent adventure. Soon the two are on their way to Sneffels, Iceland, and island nearly totally covered in volcanic craters. The parchment says exactly how to find the right crater, however once they reach Sneffels, one of the Professors friends offers him a guide. The guide named Hans is very strong and speaks danish. The trio starts their amazing journey at the start of the next day. They checked their supplies that night and get a good nights sleep. As soon as daylight broke they were off, heading to the specified crater. It took all day to reach the entrance at the bottom of the crater, so they again slept. The next day they started do...

Importance of communication in CT scan unit Essay

Importance of communication in CT scan unit - Essay Example Communication helps patients ask questions and gives CT technologists the platform to explain the procedure to them and their families while it enables the CT technologists make informed decisions alongside physicians and other medical professionals. Therefore, with the importance of communication in the CT scan unit not in question, this paper will discuss the methods of communication the CT technologists use. The CT scan unit is a formal working environment but the nature of interactions that take place there necessitate more than formal communication methods (Acuff, Bradley & Osborne, 2014). However, the most prominent methods used include written communication such letters, email and memos; oral communication such formal briefings and phone calls; online communications; scientific communication; and face-to-face communication, which entails the largest portion informal communication. All these have a common objective to communicate needs in a timely manner and remain clear, avoid repetitions, be concise and, most importantly, minimize anxiety and trauma. This type of communication remains the most prominent in the formal setup. Its significance is more emphasized in communications because CT technologists and their colleagues, physicians and medical professionals. One of the primary responsibilities of CT technologists is receiving and responding to orders from physicians as well as departmental protocols, and email and internal memos serve this function effectively. For example, email will enable CT technologists to exchange information and pass and receive messages between themselves and their team members without any of them leaving their work stations. Although the CT technologist will have an interpersonal form of communication with the patient, written communication prior to the procedure will prepare both patients and their families for what is coming (Beukelman & Ray, 2010). Social Security Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words - 1

Social Security - Essay Example   Going by the success of his 2004 re-election campaign, President Bush listed Social Security reforms as his primary domestic priority, regarding which he received ample support from many Republican stalwarts (Galston, 2007).   The whole premise behind this advocacy of a partial and systematic privatization of the Social Security Program was that this program was getting way too unwieldy and was poised to get financially unviable in the times to come (Galston, 2007). The annual report submitted by Social Security Board of Trustees in the year 2009 estimated that the program was poised to register a massive shortfall to the amount of US Dollar 15 trillion over a period of 75 years in the times to come (Social Security Administration, 2009).   This gave credence to the claims made by the Republicans that the only way to make Social Security pragmatic and financially viable was to systematically transfer the social security taxes towards the creation of private investment funds, engaging in large scale borrowing by the government to sustain the immediate Social Security liabilities and to plan drastic cuts in the social security aimed at the future retirees, believing that the gains made by the private investment funds will compensate for these cuts.   This proposal was further supported by the statistical evidence pointing towards the fact that the Federal mandatory spending primarily covering Social Security and social insurance entitlements was also soaring every successive year.

Canada and The Korean War Essay examples -- History, War

Overshadowed by the previous, long and devastating Second World War, the Korean War became known by Canadian veterans as the "Forgotten War". After Japan's defeat in World War II, Korea was split into two parts, North Korea and South Korea. North Korea was occupied by the communist country of USSR while South Korea was held by the Americans and other democratic nations. War officially broke out on June 25, 1950, when the North Koreans assaulted across the country's division on the 38th Parallel with their men and artillery behind them. North Korea and its leaders wanted to unify the whole country from its division by taking over South Korea under their government. North Korea was allied with China and the Republic of Korea was supported by democratic nations. Although Canada did not send as many troops as the Americans, Canada played a vital part in the war being victorious over several important battles. The Korean War was significant for Canada because it demonstrated Cana da's relations with the US and UN and showcased its growing power among other nations. Canada participated in the Korean War because of their obligation to UN, American influence, and Canada's early misconception of the war. The United Nations was formed shortly before the end of World War II when the League of Nations was deemed useless when it failed to prevent the outbreak of the war. Canada was so obliged to helping UN because they were a part of it when it was formed. Canada alongside the "Big Five" and others, became one of the original members of the peacekeeping and peacemaking UN. It was stated that "Canada has always been a strong supporter of the United Nations and of peacekeeping, and has participated in almost every mission since its inc... ...a/war_conflict/cold_war/topics/274/ (accessed December 18, 2011). canadiansoldiers.com. Freud’s Theory of Id, Ego, Superego Essay

Sigmund Freud believed that our mind always have conflicts with itself. Anxiety and unhappiness is the main symptoms for this situation. Bertha Pappenhein alias Anna O case is one of the classic case study by Freud (Stevenson, 1996). Anna O is a young girl in her early twenties; she was a patient of Dr. Breuer. She showed some physiological and psychological disturbance like nervous cough, rigid paralysis, eye movement disturbed, power of speech reduces and others (Stevenson, 1996). After doing some hypnosis, Freud noticed that these disturbances are actually parts of her memories while she was nursing her dying father. There was once where her neighbour played a wonderful music, she was so excited and she started dancing; soon she had an urge to be at her neighbour’s house and thus leaving her father’s bedside. At that moment, she felt guilt and sadness for leaving her father’s bedside. After some time, she covers the internal conflict by coughing (Stevenson, 1996). This case had brought Freud to believe that our mind is divided into three parts- unconscious, conscious and preconscious minds which more commonly known as the id, ego and superego (Ciccarelli & White, 2012). The id or it is the primary personality found in an infant. The ids are usually demanding, immoral, illogical, irrational and selfish. It ignores about other’s desire or the reality and place it’s satisfaction at the first place (Ciccarelli & White, 2012). This is because id only functions to seek and maximize it’s pleasure and avoid pain, we say that id serves the pleasure principle (Schultz & Schultz, 2009). For example, a newborn baby; one who cries when the need is not reached but does not have the knowledge to satisfy the pleasure. Hence, the only way for the hungry infant to bring satisfaction is through reflex action. Freud has proposed this as the primary principle process (Schultz & Schultz, 2009). The only part in our mind which is in contact with reality is the ego (Feist & Feist, 2009). The ego is influenced by the â€Å"reality principle†. Ego will become more rational and logic. Besides, the ego is able to make the right decisions on each level. Ego does not ignore id’s demands but it will try to delay the action to bring satisfaction. As a child is growing up, they tend to receive punishments and gain rewards from their parents. Thus, they will learn how to avoid pain and gain pleasure at the same time (Feist & Feist, 2009). For instance, a child may want to steal some cookies from the kitchen, but will not when the parent is around (King, 2010). In short, ego can be explained as â€Å"if it feels good, do it, but only if you can get away with it† (Ciccarelli & White, 2012). The superego has the meaning of â€Å"above I† in Latin. Superego usually includes the moral values that obtained from the parents or society (McLeod, 2008). This is mainly guided by the idealistic principle where it convinces the ego to turn into moralistic goals rather than simply realistic ones. Freud suggested that around the age of 5, the superego starts to develop. According to Freud, superego consists of two parts, the conscience and ideal self. The conscience punishes the ego by creating feelings of guilt (McLeod, 2008). For example, a child steal some cookies from the kitchen, he or she will feel guilty. While for the ideal self develops from the experiences with reward for telling us how to behave and treat other people. Freud’s theory had attracted many followers due to the theory was new and creative (Plotnik, 2002). Vienna Psychoanalytic Society had formed to commence meetings with the supporters. However, some of the group members disagree with Freud’s theory and assumptions. One of the members who disagreed with Freud’s theory is Carl Jung. He was the first president of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society. At the beginning he supported Freud fully; however Jung and Freud not only ended their personal relationship but also professional relationship after four years. Jung disagree that Freud emphasis too much on the sex drive, he believes that the collective unconscious is the main force in developing personality (Plotnik, 2002). The collective, universal human memories are called the archetypes (Boreree, 2006). Another member who disagrees with Freud is Alfred Adler (Plotnik, 2002). He was another contemporary of Freud who later became the president of the society. He was criticized badly by other members after he voiced out his disagreement on Freud’s theory, not long later he reigned. Alder believed that child-rearing practices and sibling influence are the main force for the development of personality. He had mentioned that the driving force behind all human endeavors is not seeking for pleasure but for superiority. Other than that, he suggested that the order of a child is born also affects the personality development (Plotnik, 2002). For instance, firstborn feel inferior when a younger child gets all the attention. Thus, they tend to be a little more competitive (Boreree, 2006). Although Freud’s theory had attracted so many followers, however there are some flaws in this theory. The main reason for this is because most of Freud’s researches are based on case study. Due to the inherent subjectivity, case study is difficult to generalize (Achilleos, 2012). The data are not gathered systematically and they are mainly based on the qualitative subjective data. In Freud’s case study, he did not keep any records of the therapy session. Besides, the validity of Freud’s data may be one of the weaknesses of this theory. He believes that taking notes during a therapy session may distract the patient, thus he discourages the analyst to take notes during the therapy session. As a result, Freud only gathers and records data based on his memory, and this might cause the data to be incomplete (Achilleos, 2012). I believed that many of us may be familiar with these three personalities. These personalities are frequently shown in the animated form (Ciccarelli & White, 2012). The little devil as the id, the superego is the little angel while the ego is the individual that is caught in the middle struggling to decide which action is right. Normally the id will demand for an act; the superego put restrictions on how the demand can be reached while the ego will negotiate between id’s demand and superego’s restrictions. Anxiety and unhappiness will form when the id or superego does not get things done according to it’s way. The constant id-superego inner conflict is Freud’s view on how the personality works (Ciccarelli & White, 2012). Although there are some flaws and lack of evidence to prove this theory, but certain parts of the theory does explain the personality of an individual.

Heroes and How to Represent Them - 929 Words

The word hero is Greek, from a root that means â€Å"to protect and serve†. A hero is someone who is willing to sacrifice his own needs on behalf of others, like a Sheppard who will sacrifice to protect and serve his flock. At the root, the idea of hero is connected with self sacrifice† (Vogler, pg. 29). A hero represents an ego which distinct them from the rest of the human race. The journey of many heroes separates them from a family or tribe. They begin a long journey of only wisdom and power which keeps them distant from their home. According to Christopher Vogler, the author of The Writers Journey: Mythic Structure for writers, a hero’s journey requires many inner strength and functions. One of these functions is growth. Growth meaning growing from a young man into an older one. When you go from you acquire knowledge and that is what happened to these heroes. This growth occasionally shows through the collection of the hero’s knowledge and wisdom which helps the hero gain strength while conquering obstacles on his journey. The obstacle tests the hero’s power to determine if the hero will die or survive. In every heroes story there is a confrontation with death. If the hero doesn’t actually face death then he is threatened with death which will show if the hero may succeed-live or fail-die. â€Å"The heart of many stories is the learning that goes on between a hero and a mentor, or a hero and a lover, or even between a hero and a villain (Vogler, pg.31).† A hero is defined as aShow MoreRelatedThe Bible And The Odyssey1662 Words   |  7 Pagesof the books.
